Michael “Mike” Andrew Cepress was a ray of sunshine on the cloudiest of days. Gregarious, generous, funny, and always full of tricks, he had a way of seeing the positive in any circumstance. He was a true gentleman, and never said no when someone needed a hand—if you needed two, he would give you four.
Michael shared 63 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Darlene, caring for her with a deep and steady devotion. He was a proud dad to their daughters, Angelia and Martha, and a doting grandpa to Hillary, Sidney, Graham, Olivia, Ethan, and Violet.
Michael was an avid reader and always explored a new interest; astronomy, woodworking, airplanes, banjo. He also appreciated good Scotch, eggs on toast, nice golf shirts, and the simple delight of bird watching.
Born in Wisconsin Rapids, WI on June 18, 1941, Michael attended Assumption High School and the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. He went on to build a career spanning more than 40 years with the State of Wisconsin.
In 1998, Mike and Darlene followed his dream of golf-course living and moved to Roseville, California. It didn't take long for him to build a new life filled with friendships, community, and golf, including a rare hole-in-one. He was an early member of the Golden Niners Club, and a dedicated mentor for the kids in First Tee. Among the many friends who held a special place in his life were Deane, Keith, Lowell, Hubert, and Trudy.
Michael died unexpectedly at home on October 9, at the age of 85, leaving behind a family and a community enriched by his generosity, enthusiasm, and love. He will be remembered for his bright spirit and his boundless willingness to serve others. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Michael is survived by his wife, Darlene (Lehman); his daughters, Angelia and Martha (Jimmy Chung); his six grandchildren, Hillary, Sidney, Graham, Olivia, Ethan, and Violet; and his sister, Alice (Culp).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roman and Louise (Stensburg); his sister, Marcia (Faga); and his grandson, Evan (Cepress-Chung).
